- How chocolate became very popular:Thousands of years ago, during the Mayan and Aztec civilizations, people used to drink chocolate and named it ‘the plant of Gods’. When it was introduced to Europe through Spanish colonizers, people didn’t like the bitter taste of the chocolate drink at the beginning but it was gradually accepted after adding honey, sugar, and other ingredients to modify it but it was limited to the upper class at that time.
In the 18th century, the industry flourished in the UK after the advance in the machinery which made manufacturing of chocolate easier and more affordable. In the 19th century, machines which could separate cocoa butter from the solids and could make cocoa powder were invented as well. Mass production increased and import-export trading became international along with very successful marketing strategies by the main companies linking it with the idea of love, passion, energy, and relaxation. After the medical advancement and discoveries, chocolate was studied and analyzed and it was proven to have positive impact on human brain and body which also helped making it more and more popular around the world.
